1. The settling of spores of red algae suspending in the sea water on the substratum was investigated with the coralline spores. 2. The number of spores settled on various sorts of glass surfaces having different grades of roughness (Fig. 1) was examined stochastically by means of the Latin Square method. Number of spores was significantly greater on the surface with macroscopic roughness (unevenness of ca 500-750μ) than on the smooth and slightly rough ones (unevenness less than spore diameter) (Tab. 1,2). 3. On the undulated glass surface (Fig. 2) much more number of spores were found in the sunken areas than in the upheaved areas, the proportion being about 10 : 1 (in the tide pool) or 3 : 1 (in the bay) (Tab. 3). 4. The relation between the number of spores and the inclination of glass surfaces was surveyed, with 4 grades (steps) of angles, 0°, 30°, 60°, 90°(Fig. 3). Throughout the survey, the number of spores decreased as the inclination became steeper(Tab. 4,Fig. 4).
