Recently, in the Japan Society of Educational Sociology, research which approaches academic career from the aspect of culture have been gaining attention. Students' adaptation to school life through internalization of the school culture, however, is still to be developed. In this study, focusing on the habitus of students, the adaptation process of students to their school lives was studied empirically. The survey was carried out on the juniors and seniors and first year graduate students of 'K' University in 'F' prefecture. 16 students who graduated from socially and culturally prestigious senior high schools were selected as a sample of the study. Intensive interviews were conducted from March 18 to April 12, 1988, with five to six hours being spent for a single interviewee. The results of the survey are as follows. It was found that the students whose habitus is highly similar to that of the school participate in school life without being conscious of their habitus. In contrast, those whose habitus has less similarity with that of the school are inclined to feel that there is a crisis in their school lives. These students actively make an effort to change their habitus. Through this dialectical change of their habitus, they are able to easily adapt to school life. From this perspective, I empirically studied the representation of school life, friendship making, participation in school events, style of making contact with teachers and self selection for higher education. On the basis of this study, the conclusion may be drawn that there is a necessity to study what meaning school life conveys to students.
