The studies on mass communication by American sociologists represented by C. W. Mills were introduced to Japan, then the question thereof began to be enthusiastically argued in our country. Since 1954 when the broadcasting of television covered many districts, moreover, people became interested in the question. More specifically, many of the theses on mass communication written during the time from l954 to 1965 related to "the influence of television on education." And most of them pointed out that television worked badly for education, but some could be actually proved and some could not. Since 1966, remarkable amount of journals came to mention about 'post-industrial society.' Stimulated by the references on post-industrial society, Yujiro Hayashi created a concept of "informational society." They became interested in the relationship between mass communication and education in an informational society. The informational society defined by Hayashi means the society based upon information processing by computers. The important points in this society are how to collect information and how to select it. In addition, creative judgement is also very important while the data of information are processed by computers. Information in mass communication should serve for attitude change and formation and it should be treated for the benefit of his behavior. As mentioned above, the meaning of mass communication in an informational society is different from that in other societies. Mainly from the viewpoint of school education, they gradually utilize mass media as often as possible. Besides the text books and libraries, they are going to utilize television as an important supplementary medium for school education. It is considered as the use of mass communication for the systematization of education.
