The theories on the absorption wave-length of conjugated linear chains are examined in the π-electron approximation. The FE model, its modification and the LCAO MO model are discussed, and to what extent they are in agreement with experiment is examined. A new interpretation on the theory of carotenoids is proposed. Further the collective oscillation of the liner π-electron system and the LCAO MO theory on the bond alternation are discussed.
