The motion of a particle embedded in a continuous medium is treated. It is shown that in one and three dimensional cases the particle behaves as a damped oscillator, whereas in other dimensions its behavior is more complicated. The types of behavior of the particle are shown to be in parallel with those of a heavy particle substituted for one of the lattice particles. The difference in the types of behavior is partly due to the well-known difference in the nature of solutions for odd dimensional and even dimensional wave equations.
