In this paper, in the first place the characteristic distribution of counterions around the assembly of many polyions is investigated on the basis of the exact solution of the general two-dimentional Poisson-Boltzmann equation, and from this result the interaction between two rod-like polyions is also derived. Through these theoretical studies, it is found that counterions interact cooperatively with polyions and strongly depress the repulsive force between two polyions. In the second place, the mechanism of the precipitation of polyions with salts is studied by various experimental methods. It is emphasized here that the specific ion-binding and hydration have the essential effects on the precipitation phenomenon of polyions.
