It has been reported that the number of potato tubers harvested increased about two times by dipping seed tubers in indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) solution for 2 h in the field test. In the present study, we investigated the effects of IBA and 4-chloro-indole-3-acetic acetic acid (4-Cl-IAA), which has been reported to have a promotive effect on thickening growth of tuberous root of sweet potato, on potato tuberization and the effect of inhibitors of auxin transport, which have tuber-inducing activity, on diageotropic response of lateral shoots using cultures of single-node segments of potato stems in vitro. Both the auxins didn't have tuber-inducing activity and inhibited the tuberization induced by 4% sucrose or 10^<-6> M jasmonic acid. Lateral shoots formed on medium that contained 4% sucrose exhibited diageotropic response as concentration of the auxin increased. Inhibitors of auxin transport tested also induced diageotropic response of lateral shoots. The strength of induction of diageotropic response of lateral shoots resembled that of tuber-inducing activity they themselves had. These results suggest the possible involvement of auxin in the tuberization and/or the induction of diageotropic response of lateral shoots.
