Color used in children's plastic arts demonstrates their color affection towards color. In the last presentation, I researched Japanese children associating color with words (gender words and affective words). The result was that gender affects the affective meaning so that the children differentiate their use of color according to gender.I have conducted a similar research with Czech children. They do not differentiate their use of color by gender. I have compared both researches. I would like to present how culture and environment affect (formation of) the children's affective meaning on color and the image.I showed 15 color samples to Czech children, and made them choose color associated with gender words and affective words. I tested 73 children of 4 to 8 years old for about 30 minutes. This research was carried out in September 2000.Black' associates with `afraid', `strong', `dislike', `father' and `boy', while `red' associates with `pretty' , `grandmother' , `mother' , `girl' and `older sister' for both Czech and Japanese children alike. Associating `afraid' with `black' is especially common. There was no boundary in country, sex and age to choose color. Therefore, it is recognized as a universalaffective meaning. Besides, there is no other strong association with words. Because they are not used to associating color with gender, it is hard to associate color with `person' such as `father' and `mother'. However, boys associated their "favorite color" with boy's colors while girls associated their "favorite color" with girl's colors. They showed a tendency to choose `men' with cold colors and `women' with warm colors. It seems that environment and culture are not the only elements determining the affective meaning of color and color image.
