First the author investigated the progress of abrasion, and found that it consists of the following three stages viz, the severe procedure due to unevenness of initial surface, the irregular procedure due to work hardening and the regular procedure. Next the author clarifies that the abrasing surface is in the work-hardened condition, the degree of working corresponding to the condition of friction. Thus the observed results from the abrasion tests are complicated as the are combinations of both destructive and work-hardening actions. According to the results of the experiments on materials which are generally considered to have no work-hardening property, such as ordinaly glass, some oil stones and animal bones. the abrasion per unit run is proportional to the rubbing pressure and is independent to the speed. This result of experiments is considered to show the general form of the destructive action of friction. The abrasion of metal is not commonly in compliance with the general form mentioned above ; this difference should be based on the work-hadening property of metal itself. By using the rate of this difference, we can easily treat the irregularity of metal abrasion. Finally the author observed microscopically the internal structure of the abrasing surface with special sampls, and found that it is formed of the three layers viz., the fiberic layer, the workhardened layer and the ground layer. These layers make a marked difference concerning to theis direction relative to that of rubbing, and we can clearly observe this difference on the abrasion-time curve by suddenly changing the rubbing direction.
