In the preceding paper (Part 3), it was suggested that cyanide inhibited distinctly the oxygen consumption in presence of resting nodule bacteria as activating sources. The experiments here reported indicate, that the concentration of cyanide to produce marked inhibition uaried with Rh. meliloti and Rh. lupini in the phosphate buffer containing different kinds of sugars, and that the amounts of cyanide added were influences upon methylene blue concentration as a catalytic dye. Respiration of Rh. Iupini was poisoned by cyanide at lower concentration, while Rh. meliloti was so stable as moderate concentrations of KCN up to M/_<100> were found to exert inhibition on the oxygen consumption. Lower concentration, about M/_<1000> KCN and below, caused an increase in the rate of carbohydrate oxidation by Rh. meliloti. Catalytic influences of methylene blue upon glucose oxidation by both organisms were not considered even at lower concentration of the dye. However an injurious effect of the dye was remarkable. In the presence of methylene blue (0.001%) cyanide at the concentration of M/_<1000> and M/_<100> exerted slight benefit on the glucose oxidation by Rh. meliloti and Rh. Iupini, of which the former was more accelerated by the same concentration of KCN.
