Further experiments were conducted to ascertain the effects of potassium cyanide and methylene blue as well as other reversible oxidation dyes on the oxygen consumption of certain root nodule bacteria. The rate of glucose oxidation of Rh. meliloti inhibited by potassium cyanide was on increase after 2 houra in M/15 phosphate buffer but not in phosphate saline and Ringer bicarbonate solutions. To obtain the quantity of oxygen uptake of bacteria in presence of dyes, once the respiration of the cells alone was determined, the dyes were added from the side arm of the Warburg vessel and the oxygen consumption again measured. Although the oxygen uptake of Rh. meliloti was definitely catalysed by mathylene blue for about 15 minutes, the rate of respiration afterwards low. This fact probably suggested an apparent inhibition of the dye as in our preceeding experiments, in which the normal consumption of oxygen by Rh. meliloti was quicker than the oxidation activated by the dye. It was demonstrated that methylene blue and brilliant cresy blue acted as catalysts on oxygen consumptions of both alfalfa and "genge" bacteria, but not those of soybean and lupine bacteria, and that the dyes, whose normal potentials were between-0.046 and-0.340 m. v.-potassium indigo tetrasulphonate, potassium indigo disulphonate, phenosafranin, janus green and neutral red-were unable to show accelerations of the oxidation of the nodule bacteria, excluding slight effectiveness of neutral red on Rh. japonicum and Rh. lupini. Methylen blue produced restoration of glucose oxidation of alfalfa and "genge" bacteria poisoned by potassium cyanide. However, it might be suggestible that methylene blue restored the ability to consume oxygen to cyanide poisoned of soybean bacteria, but neutral red could not.
