Observation of the profiles and chemical analysis were made on the red upland soils of Central Mountaines at Tamazato district in Karenko-cho. The soils are derived from crystalline schists. The profile consists of the following horizons : (A) the surface soil (15cm.) deep; clay rich in humus (3.5) and with dark reddish brown colour, (B_1)(B_2) the subsoils; hard nutty structure poor in humus (1.9-1.6 %) and with brick or reddish colour. (B_2) horizon : with more motherrocks and more reddish than (B_1) horizon, and the boundary of the two horizons is indistinct. The fertility of these soils is poor, especially in the content of K_2O, and P_2O_5 nutrients; and after two or three cane croppings, the productivity decreases suddenly. When field is wet after rain, it becomes persistent, and when it is dried up, it becomes too hard to plow and forms deep crackes. The climate of this district resembles to the savanna. (22.4℃ of the average annual temperature and 1.9962. mm. of the total annual precipitation) The results of chemical analysis are shown as follows. (1) HCl soluble SiO_2,Al_2O_3 content, their molecular ratios, pH and total exchange acidity by DAIKUBARA'S method are shown in the following table. (in fine soil)[table](2) H_2SO_4 soluble constituents of the HCl treated residue are shown as follows. (in original soil)[table](3) free Fe_2O_3 by HARADA'S method and free Al_2O_3 by STEBUTT'S method are as follows.[table]Considering the above tables, the red soil of Eastern Part of Formosa (derived from crystalline schists) seems to be partly podozolized and to belong to lateritic red loam.
