The natures of alkali spot, its surrounding land, and the influences of alkali salts on sugar cane plant were investigated. The results will be summarized as follows;- (1) The alkali spot is usually situated below its surrounding land, and the former is richer in clay fractions near the surface horizon than the later. From these reasons, the origin of the alkali spot is geneally due to seepage. (2) In general we have a good vegetation of sugar cane plant in proportion to the distances from the alkali spot. (3) The horizontal distributions of water soluble solids and Cl' of these soils are definitively eliminated according to these vegetations, but SO_3'', HCO_3' and pH are diverse. (4) The influences of soluble solids and Cl' in soils on sugar cane plant will be generally summarized as follows; [table] (5) Brix, sucrose and aopparent purity of juices obtained from the violent damaged plants are lower and reducing sugar content of the juices is slightly higher than those of the juices obtained from the slightly damaged plants. (6) The stalks of the violent damaged plants contain a great amount of total N, total ash, CaO, MgO, K_2O, Na_2O, SO_3 and Cl, but the quantities of Fe_2O_3 + Al_2O_3,Mn_3O_4 and P_2O_5 (these substances decrease in ash %) are indifferent (7) CaO : MgO : K_2O : Na_2O; the mean ratio of the absorbed substances for the extents of damaged stalks is 2.28 : 4.74 : 54.50 : 38.48 and SO_3 : Cl is 57.22 : 42.78. These ratios are indifferent for the extents of damage in these experiments. (8) In views of the results mentioned above, it is seemed that the influences of alkali salts are not due to the ratios of the absorbed substances, but generally due to the concentrations of the soil solutions and absorbed solts in stalks.
