Iron deficiency symptoms which were induced in rice grown in purified sand at a normal manganese level (10μM) with nitrate addition became more severe in the ferric citrate than in the Fe-EDTA treatment; no deficiency symptom was observed in the ammonium nitrate treatment with either source of iron. At this level of manganese (10μM), plants grown in nitrate with either source of iron, compared to those grown in ammonium nitrate with the same source of iron as in the nitrate treatment, showed a decrease in dry matter production, chlorophyll content, and specific activities of catalase, succinic dehydrogenase, and aconitase enzymes. By lowering the manganese supply from 10 to 0.02μM, the induced iron deficiency effects-decrease in dry matter production, chlorophyll content, and specific activities of catalase, succinic dehydrogenase, and aconitase were considerably mitigated in the nitrate treatment with both the iron sources. Whereas, by increasing the supply of manganese from 10 to 100μM, there was an increase in the content of leaf manganese and iron, dry matter production and in the specific activities of peroxidase, succinic dehydrogenase, and malic dehydrogenase enzymes in all the treatments except for the leaf iron content in the ammonium nitrate-ferric citrate treatment, dry matter production in the nitrate ferric citrate treatment, succinic dehydrogenase activity in the ammonium nitrate-Fe-EDTA treatment, aconitase activity in the nitrate-Fe-EDTA treatment, chlorophyll content and malic dehydrogenase activity in the ammonium nitrate-Fe-EDTA treatment.
