STRATIGRAPHY, DISTRIBUTION, MINERALOGY, AND GEOCHEMISTRY OF LATE QUATERNARY TEPHRAS ERUPTED FROM THE AKITA-KAMAGATAKE VOLCANO, NORTHEASTERN JAPAN

Late Quaternary tephras erupted from the Akita-Komagatake Volcano were divided into eight major stratigraphical units. They were, in a descending order, the Akita-Komagatake Volcanic Ash (AK)-a, AK-b, AK-c, AK-d, AK-e (the Hayasaka Pumice), AK-f, AK-g (the Yanagisawa Pumice), and AK-h (the Koiwai Pumice). The distribution of marker beds of tephra deposits with the exception of AK-a and AK-f was studied, and the thickness contour map of marker beds was shown. Especially AK-g and AK-h covered an extensive area along the upper and middle upper courses of the Kitakami River. AK-a to AK-f were the ejecta erupted in Holocene, and AK-b and AK-e were estimated to be erupted about 2,800 and 8,000 years ago, respectively, from the radio-carbon dates. The Upper Pleistocene tephras, AK-g and AK-h, were estimated to be erupted 12,400 and 13,500-16,300 years ago, respectively. The dominant heavy minerals of the Akita-Komagatake tephras were augite, hypersthene, and magnetite. The chemical composition of ferromagnetic minerals was also studied in order to clarify the rock type of the soil-forming parent materials. From relationships between V/(Fe+Ti) and Zn/(Fe+Ti) of ferromagnetic minerals, the rock type of some tephra deposits was basaltic andesite for the Hayasaka Pumice, andesite for AK-g and AK-h ashes, the Yanagisawa Pumice-1,and the Koiwai Pumice, and dacite for the Yanagisawa Pumice-2. The morphological features of the soil profiles developed on these accumulated tephra deposits and relationships between the terrace plain and the stratigraphy of tephras are also discussed.
