HYDRATION EFFECTS ON THE VISCOSITY OF ALLOPHANE AND IMOGOLITE CLAY SUSPENSIONS

Hydration effects on the viscosity of dilute allophane and imogolite clay suspensions were studied. Montmorillonite was used for comparison. After leaching with 1 M NaCl the clay suspensions were dialyzed against water for 14 or 21 days and their viscosity was determined. The viscosity of the dialyzed suspensions was also determined after the addition of NaCl solution. The viscosities of allophane, imogolite and montmorillonite clay suspensions increased with increasing length of dialysis. The increase was larger for the former two clays. The addition of NaCl solution to the dialyzed suspensions resulted in the decrease or the further increase in the viscosity, suggesting two kinds of the viscosity increase by dialysis. The viscosity decrease by the NaCl addition was observed for all the suspensions of imogolite and montmorillonite dialyzed for 21 and 14 days, respectively, and the suspensions of allophane dialyzed for less than 3 days and ascribed to the decrease in the total volume of individual particles due to the decrease in the hydration. The further increase of viscosity by the NaCl addition was observed for the suspensions of allophane dialyzed for more than 7 days and ascribed to the increase of the total volume of aggregated particles due to the occlusion of water within aggregates. Individual allophane and imogolite particles were divided into smaller ones by shaking or sonic wave treatment.
