We developed a new type of calcium phosphate cement for use as a root canal sealer in endodontic treatment. The solid phase of the cement is 70% α-tricalcium phosphate(α-TCP)and 30% barium sulfate, and the iquid phase contains 37% citric acid, 5% tannic acid and 58% distilled water. Barium sulfate was added as a radio-opaquing agent. A commercially available zinc oxide eugenol sealer was used as a control in this experiment. We studied the effects on the setting time and root canal sealing ability of barium sulfate in the experimentally developed α-TCP cement. We found that the cement had good setting time and excellent sealing ability for use as a root canal sealer. We concluded that the experimentally developed material is suitable for clinical use as a root canal sealer.
