This paper examines the tendency of fluctuation between the -OB ending and the zero ending of words whose semantic category has been referred to as <units of measurement>, e. g. грамм. The results are based on a survey conducted on the linguistic awareness of 144 college students of philology in St. Petersburg in 2001. The results of the survey showed that there are three types of -OB/zero selection patterns: (1) a higher percentage of zero (e.g. ватт, вольт), (2) an equal percentage of -OB/zero (e.g. грамм, килограмм), (3) a higher percentage of -OB (e.g. эрг, максвелл). However, with regard to these results, we have to remember that the use of the zero ending in <units of measurement> has a scientific origin, but the informants for this survey were students of philology who are not necessarily familiar with such words. The Type (1) words showed the same results as could be expected from previous studies-namely, the tendency toward a high degree of preference for the zero ending. Here we can say that the zero ending is fixed. After comparing the results for the Type (2) words and those of previous studies, no differences were found; that is to say, there is still an equal tendency for selection of the -OB/zero endings. However, the increase in the zero ending that was expected was not observed. As for the Type (3) words, which the informants are not always accustomed to using, observations showed that the informants tend to choose the -OB ending for these words, no matter how clearly the context may satisfy the conditions for <счетная форма> as described in orthoepic dictionaries. This result seems to be affected by the informants' interests and awareness, but it also indicates that the definition of <счетная форма> is still open to question. The results for 'гектар' also point to the opacity of this definition.
