The genitive plural ending for the majority of masculine nouns is -ов, but it is known that certain masculine nouns also take the zero ending (e.g. граммов/грамм). This paper reports on the current tendency of fluctuation between the -ов ending and the zero ending for words in the following semantic categories : fruit and vegetables, members of human groups (military units), and objects occurring mostly in pairs. This report is based on the results of a survey carried out in 2001 on the linguistic awareness of 144 college students of philology in St. Petersburg. This survey showed that both -ов/zero can be chosen, but the tendencies for their selection vary according to word groups, as follows : <fruit and vegetables> ; <military units> Previous studies indicate that the zero ending is used fairly consistently. However, the results of this study indicate that there may be a retrieval phenomenon of -ов ending preference (instead of the newer zero ending), because the data obtained from the questionnaire showed a percentage of -ов selection that was. higher than that predicted, and this tendency was observed even for words whose -013 forms have been considered archaic in former studies. With respect to military units. Ozegov and Svedova (eds.) say in their dictionary that when a word is used with collective meaning. the zero ending is preferred, and when it is not used with collective meaning. -ов is preferred. The responses to our questionnaire, however, did not confirm this description. <objects occurring mostly in pairs> The zero ending is chosen with greater frequency in this group only. Additional survey results for this group make it clear that the cognition of the nominative singular form (masculine or feminine nouns) has nothing to do with the choice of genitive plural endings.
