The writer found previously that the protein of polyhedral bodies, the inclusion bodies of virus particles, of silkworms dissolved in ethanol after treatment with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and that no protein in cell-nuclei of the healthy insects had such a property. Then he') observed that this phenomenon was due to the speciality of the polyhedral protein, that TCA had the strongest effect to cause the protein to dissolve in alcohol, and that methanol, ethanol, and acetone were effective as solvents. Further it was concluded from the determinations of viscosity and light scattering that the protein molecules in ethanol containing TCA highly associated. In the present paper, the effect of alcohol-concentration on the solubility of polyhedral protein in ethanol containing TCA was studied. In aqueous alcohol solutions the concentration of which was in the range from 60 to 80 per cent, the solubility of the protein was maximum and was almost proportional to the content of TCA. In 40 per cent or more diluted ethanol solutions, no protein dissolved. In stronger alcohol solutions than 90 per cent, the solubility of the protein again decreased. The supposition that water may make the dielectric constant of the solvent suitable for dissolution of the protein is not enough to explain the effect of water, because the protein is insoluble in glycerol containing TCA, in spite of the fact that the value of 43 for its dielectric constant at 20° is in the range of values for the constant of 60 to 80 per cent ethanol 49 to 37. By the TCA-ethanol treatment, virus particles were liberated from polyhedral bodies and were partially destroyed, as shown in the electron micrograph.多角体蛋白質はトリクロール醋酸の存在で60~80%のエタノールに最もよく溶け, その溶解度はトリクロール醋酸の濃度に比例する. 50%以下及び90%以上のアルコールへの溶解度は極めて低い. このトリクロール醋酸一アルコール処理によつて, 多角体からバイラス粒子が遊離するが, 一部損傷を受ける.
