In this paper is investigated the relationship between internal damping force of the rotating shaft system and generation of self-excited vibration relating to driving torque. The model used for analysis is of assumed as a one-rotor horizontally supported on two ball bearings. The internal damping force and the characteristics of driving torque are both assumed to be linear, and these values were applied to the equations of motion of the system. The first approximate equations were derived by asymptotic method from above equations of motion. Using these equations, numerical analyses with Runge-Kutta-Gill's method were carried out. In these cases, the values of internal damping coefficients of rotating shaft system used in numerical calculation was estimated experimentally. The main results obtained are as follows : Theoretical values of limits for stability at stationary conditions were closely coincident with experimental values. And as for the generation of self-excited vibration and the amplitude characteristics of the rotor vibrations during transient stage, experimental results were also closely coincident with numerically calculated ones.
