In this paper an automatic document feeder for facsimile is described which feeds the top document laid on a pile upwards. The document feeder has three functions; passing papers to the feed roller, choosing the top paper from among the paper pile and feeding the chosen one. It can most effectively pass papers when the angle of the feeder is nearly vertical. However this configuration has not been adopted due to equipment design. It has became clear from our experimental results that the angle of the the feeder needs to be more than 23 degrees for proper passing of paper. An auxiliary roller is effective when feeding is done at the angle less than 23 degrees. The friction conditions and influence of friction variation on a feeder with an auxiliary roller are discussed. The results obtained are as follows. (1) The coefficient of friction between papers is definite at a velocity of less than 50 mm/s. (2) The coefficient of friction between papers drops lower when these papers are used repeatedly. (3) Rubber friction becomes lower due to using. What is more, an automatic document feeder with an auxiliary roller can be realized which is continuously usable without worries as to the influences of friction variation.
