Determination of thorium in apatite minerals was examined using solvent extraction-ICP-AES. Spectral interference by calcium in the apatite and negative interference by the macro-component (calcium phosphate) existed simultaneously for thorium. Therefore, after apatite mineral were treated with hot concentrated nitric acid, thorium were separated from these calcium phosphates using solvent extraction. 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-trifluoroacetyl-5-pyrazolone (pKa:2.73) was used as an extraction reagent in the present study. In addition, diisobutyl ketone was selected as the extraction organic solvent. Thorium were quantitatively extracted from beyond pH2, and separated from apatite composites using this extraction system. The organic phase was injected directly in the ICP-AES spectrometer. The thorium contents in apatite minerals were found to be 8.84 ±0.19 ppm from the USA and 3.74 ± 0.21 ppm from Jordan, respectively. These results were also quite camparable with these measured using ICP-MS..
