The reaction of grafted bone and host, after on allograft operation was studied clinically by blood and radiografic analysis. The grafted bone was obtained form the femoral head, during replacement surgery done on cases with femoral head fracture or osteoarthritis. After washing and removing the cartilage, the bone was stored at -30℃, under sterile condition before use. Bone grafts were done in 35 cases of bone tumor. The hosts reaction after the operation was evaluated by clinical findings, and blood exzaminations. The process of bone union was examined by radiography, and comparison was made between the allograft group and the autograft group. The results were as followed: After implantation, the change in the counts of C-reactive protein, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, white blood cell and immunoglobulin were not different between the allograft group and the non-bone grafted group. In the case of massive allograft, however, the percentage of eosinophil in total leucocytes was at a continuously high level during 2-5 weeks after the operation. The completion of bone union in the allograft group was delayed more than the autograft group, (12 months in the allograft and 3 months in the autograft). The recurrence rate was not different between both groups. these results suggested that allograft is safe and equal to autograft for the material to cover bone defect in a bone graft operation.
