An upper bound for the diffraction-peak width w(s) is rigorously derived under the assumptions that the near-forward scattering amplitude at high energies is dominated by its absorptive part and that the s- and u- channel absorptive parts A_s(s,t) and A_u(u,t) have the usual parametrization: A_s(s,t)=A_s(s,0)exp{B_s(s)・t} and A_u(u,0)exp{B_u(u)・t}. The result is that either w(s) =B_s^<-1>(s)≤const s^ε for a sequence of s→∞ or w(u)=B_u^<-1>(u)≤const u^ε for a sequence of u→∞. Here ε is an arbitorary small positive number.
