The masses and the mixings of various mesons are investigated by the use of a hybrid of linear and quadratic mass formulae in the quartet scheme. The mass of the charmed vector meson D^* is predicted to be 2.02 GeV which is in good agreement with the recent experimental results. As for pseudoscalar mesons the masses of I=Y=C=0 states are expected to be affected by the existence of new urbaryons heavier than the charmed one, when the rather large breaking of the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule is taken into consideration. When a candidate of the charmed meson D with a mass of 1.87 GeV is taken as input, the mass of η_c is predicted to be 2.6 GeV which is slightly smaller than the experimental value 2.8 GeV. This difference can be explained by the small admixture of the heavier urbaryon pair. It is suggested that rather large mixing or OZI rule breaking for pseudoscalar mesons is closely related to the SU(8) singlet state of L=0.
