Among hadrons, a pion has several unusual characteristics which is generally thought to be caused by the nature of the pion as a Goldstone boson. We investigate this peculiarity of the pion by using the method of the composite model in the independent particle picture. It is found that the concept of two kinds of quark masses plays the leading role; one is the effective quark mass in each hadron, and the other is the bare quark mass, which is common in every hadron. The main result of this paper is that there exists, in the case of a pion, the notable distinction in the relation between the effective quark mass and the bare quark mass compared with the cases of other ordinary hadrons, which is due to the fact that the role of the residual interaction is quite different in these two cases.
