Theory of Structural Phase Transition in Alkali Cyanides

Structural phase transitions in alkali cyanides are explained on the basis of the model of elastic system interacting with rotational degrees of freedom of CN^- ions. Depending on the orientational states of CN^- ions the strains {e_u,e_υ} and {e_<xy>,e_<yz>,e_<zx>} of the E_g and T_<2g> symmetry couple nonlinearly. As the result we obtain the phase diagram of the possible transition sequences in the parameter space. The cases for NaCN, KCN and RbCN are compared with the result in good agreement.
