The unusual ferroelastic transition in NaOH with the low-symmetry phase above the high-symmetry phase is explained on the basis of a model of the elastic system coupled with the orientational motion of molecular ions. The relevant coupling between the shear strain and the librational motion of molecular ions represents the tendency of the system that the ordered orientation of molecular ions hinders the shear strain and that their librational fluctuation from the equilibrium orientation favors the appearance of the shear strain. The elastic property of the system is renormalized by the thermal fluctuation of molecular ions through the coupling, which leads to an instability with increasing temperature and the appearance of the spontaneous shear strain.
