In the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur theory for N×N matrix system, the associated general nonlinear evolution equation is obtained, in which the recursion operator is directly derived from the integrability condition. Discussed are also the nonlinear superposition law and symmetries associated with the evolution equations.
