We show that the properties of the X-ray source surrounding M87 are well explained by thermal emission from the gas in hydrostatic equilibrium in the gravitational potential well of the massive halo of M87, where radiative cooling is balanced by conductive heat flux from the ambient, hot intracluster gas.
