Δ I=2 Staggering in Ground Rotational Bands and Δ A=2 Mass Staggering in the Deformed Nuclei

We find a ΔI = 2 staggering or ΔI = 4 bifurcation phenomenon in many even-even mass ground rotational bands in rare-earth and actinide nuclei by performing staggering parameter analysis. We take the Interacting Boson Model and reproduce the ΔI = 4 bifurcation by slightly modifying the SU(3) limit of the IBM wave function. The IBM then predicts ΔA = 2 mass staggering in the deformed nuclei, which is also found experimentally.
