We make a study of implications of quark mass hierarchy and flavor mixing data on the possible forms of quark mass matrices in the nearest-neighbor interaction basis. An interesting parameter space is found, in which some instructive analytical relations between quark mass ratios and the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements can be derived. In particular, we reproduce |V_<us>|〜√<m_d/m_s>, |V_<cb>| 〜 m_s/m_b and |V_<ub>/V_<cb>| 〜 √<m_u/m_c> without fine-tuning.
