The dynamics near the zigzag instability of convective rolls is studied. It is found that the system can behave in some different ways. In one case the linear growth of the deformation is soon saturated to give a stable zigzag pattern and in the other case a kind of self-focusing of the deformation occurs, leading directly to defect creation. An explicit analysis will be given on electrohydrodynamic convections in nematic liquid crystals.
