Global Anomalies in Non-Linear Sigma Models Based on Exceptional Groups : Particles and Fields

We investigate global anomalies in suppersymmetric non-linear sigma models based on exceptional groups E_l(l=6,7,8). We calculate explicitly the cohomology groups of all compact Kahler manifolds of E_l-type and the Chern characters of the tangent bundles of these manifolds. We show that E_6/SO(10)×U(1),E_6/SU(6)×U(1), E_7/E_6×U(1), E_8/E_7×U(1),E_8/E_6×U(1)-2, E_8/SO(10)×U(1)-3 and E_8/SO(14)×U(1) models only are global anomaly free. But other E_l-type sigma models are anomalous and hence cannot be quantized. We point out that these anomalies can be cancelled out by introducing matter chiral-multiplets.
