The effective potential method for the SU(2)×SU(2) lattice sigma model is extended to the fundamental-adjoint action. It is found that, in the intermediate temperature region, the adjoint action term greatly affects the minimum of the effective potential and leads to a first order phase transition. This is Essentially due to the F^4 term of the action, where F is the pitch of the sinusoidal spin configuration. When this term is eliminated by choosing a suitable ratio G=β_A/β, the system goes rather smoothly from the low to the high temperature region.
