Mathematical aspects of the commutator method, which is one of the fashionable boson expansions methods, are investigated in great detail. We intend to obtain all the possible solutions of the equations for the expansion coefficients. We show first that infinitely many hermitian expansions, with complex coefficients, are possible, the real limit of one set of these complex solutions resulting in an expansion that coincides with that of Marumori, et al. We then show that nonhermitian expansions are also possible, having as an example those obtained earlier by Kishimoto and Tamura. We further demonstrate that all these results are equivalent, in that all of them can be used to evaluate physically meaningful quantities correctly.
