The coupling of the soft mode and the thermal diffusion mode is investigated on the basis of the anharmonic soft phonon model with the aid of Mori'shydrodynamic formula. Above the transition temperature (T_c ) it is shown that a narrow central peak results from the non-linear coupling of the two modes due to the short-range order effect. We find that Enz's result derived by the classical hydrodynamic approach is obtained if a decoupling approximation is employed for contributions from the non-linear mode-mode coupling, which is shown to be inadequate for the central peak problem. More appropriate estimation of the contribution is given here. The generalized Landau-Placzek relation for the intensity ratio of the central peak and the soft mode is derived below T_c where the soft mode can linearly couple with the thermal diffusion mode. Numerical calculations of the central peak above T_c are performed.
