The relationship between the physical fact of conservation of projection of angular momentum in the emission or absorption of radiation and the existence of certain formal sum rules involving 3j and 6j symbols is discussed. The general sum rule, expressed in Eq. (7) of the text, is applied to the emission of particles of spin -^^<1. The sum rule is, however, more general than the applications made and is readily applied for arbitrary spins.
