Gravitational waves of second order for Brans and Dicke's scalar-tensor field theory with any field strength are investigated by the method of characteristics. An eleven-dimensional isometric space F_<11> with space-time is introduced and the propagation conditions are analysed in this representation. Only the transverse wave is real and it has three independent components. Whether the trace of the transverse components of the wave amplitude vanishes or not depends on whether it is a wave of a pure tensor field or a scalar-tensor field respectively.
