The Kohn variational principle for two-body scattering is extended to n-d scattering at arbitrary (nonrelativistic) energies of the incident neutron. Two-body local potentials of central type are assumed. We obtain expressions for the amplitude of the elastically scattered wave which are accurate to first order in the error of the wave functions. It turns out that these expressions reduce to those which are given by the conventional no-polarization approximation when the trial functions are taken to be the wave functions obtained by this approximation.
