Since the New Homemaking Education was started in 1947 in Japan, the Family Life Area has been treated in various ways, and sometimes completely neglected. In order to clarify the issues concerning this area in Japan, textbooks were compared between Japan and the U.S.. In the background of textbooks, there are different system of schools and cultural factors involved in both countries. The results of the analysis are as follows; 1. In Japanese textbooks, understanding of the significance and functions of family life, and their problems in modern society are respected. Whereas in the U.S., recognition of affection, parenting, family relationships in the life course of individuals from various angles are consistent. 2. We can see in the U.S. textbooks, their efforts for the minorities, and for the solving of students' issues and crises. Suggestions on the educational methods for a practical subject as ours can be derived from these findings.
