• The limitation of discomfort glare from lighting installations is an important requirement for lighting environments of offices and large area stores. Lamps mounted in luminaires must be shielded.In generally used fluorescent lamp luminaires with white diffuse reflector, the greater the shielding angle is, the more effective limitation of the glare is, but the less the luminaire efficiency is. The shielding angle of fluorescent lamp luminaire should balance glare limitation effects with luminaire efficiency.To discover a suitable shielding angle, the relationship between the efficiency as well as the effect of glare limitation was studied by measurement and calculation by means of british IES glare Indexes. A shielding anle of "15°" was found to be suitable.Luminaires incorporating the above results have been developed. Relative estimates of these luminaires as well as glare limiting luminaires are also described.
