Numerous medieval charters used to be condemned and alienated if archivists found out that they were`forged'. Recently, however, researchers have taken an interest in these documents, because they may reveal how literacy functioned in medieval Europe. This paper examines some of these forged charters, taking the experience of Westminster Abbey in the twelfth century as an example. Westminster Abbey and St Albans Abbey had a long-standing dispute over the manor of Aldenham, Hertfordshire. There still survive several Westminster charters concerning that estate issued by from King Offa in the eighth century to King Henry II in the twelfth century. All except those of Henry II have been found to be forgeries of the twelfth century. A close examination of them and the society of twelfth century England suggests that they had to be`forged'in order to be produced in disputes as evidence of long-term hold, in an age where reliance on written records was only gradually increasing.
