The functional relation between the brain stem and the limbic system was discussed in connection with emotional behavior.A survey of the literature and the results of experiments in our laboratory reveal that the hypothalamus-midbrain contains emotion-producing focal areas. The limbic system is divided into two major portions of the temporal pole-amygdala and the hippocampus-cingulum (Papez's circuit) according to their fiber connections. On the basis of the data from brain lesions studies, it is suggested that the temporal pole-amygdala functions in an emotion-deciding process which is present before an emotion-producing process in the brain stem, and the hippocampus-cingulum works in a behavior-directing process after an emotion is driven.
