Psychoneuroendorcinological studies were carried out in order to clarify the psychosomatic relationship of bronchial asthma. A Total of 42 patients, 20 males and 22 females, who were suffering from bronchial asthma without complications, were selected from admitted patients. In the neuroendocrinological study, the dopaminergic system of the hypothalamo-pituitary gland was studied by examinations of the effect of Bromocriptine on plasma growth hormone (GH) levels and plasma prolactin (PRL) levels. A single 2.5mg dose of Bromocriptine, a dopamine receptor agonist, was given orally and blood was drawn every half hour for a 3 hour period. Plasma GH & PRL values were asessed by a radio-immunological assay method. We assured the absorption and action of Bromocriptine by suppression of PRL secretion. The secretion patterns of plasma GH to Bromocriptine were divided into two types : a response type and a non-response type. The response type showed an increase in plasma GH levels higher than 10 ng/ml on the peak values after Bromocriptine administration. The non-response type showed no changes in plasma GH levels following administration of Bromocriptine. The results were as follows : 1) Of the 42 cases with bronchial asthma, 55% were the response type and 43% were the non-response type. 2) There was a significant correlation between the non-response type and the non-atopic type of bronchial asthma (χ^2=5.10,P<0.05). 3)The non-response type had significantly more instances of childhood "separation" from parent(s) than the response typ (χ^2=4.13,P<0.05). 4) There was no difference between the response type and the non-response type in the results of CMI, MAS, CAI and P-F study. The above results suggest that the non-atopic type of bronchial asthma with hypo-function of the dopaminergic system of the hypothalamo-pituitary gland implies a typical psychosomatic group of bronchial asthma.
