Functional aphonia has been considered as a psychosomatic disorder. In this paper, the authors pnesented a case study of a 21-year old male patient, who lost his valuable bag in the train, in which he had some love letters from a girl friend as well as his drivers license. Having been much distressed about his incident, he lost his voice two days afterwards. After admission, an organic aphonia was excluded by laryngoscopy, the electroencephalography and general examinations, while his hysterical character was noted by Rorschach-test. On the third day after admission, he wrote a poem which he wished to read out loud. When he gratified his impulse, he was able to produce sound and his aphonia disappeared.Searching the dynamics of his symptom for mation revealed that he had been involved in complieated love affairs, and that losing the love letters appearently facilitated his conflict with his other girl friends. Finally, the authors discussed some phychological factors to be related to functional sphonia.
