Relative abundance and phenology of thrips were studied, based upon their periodical sampling on tea bush by using two sticky suction traps in Kanaya(Shizuoka Pref.), Central Japan. The total samples consisting of 42 species and 43,961 individuals showed the over-whelming predominance of Scirtothrips dorsalis (62.7%), followed by Thrips hawaiiensis (23.1%), T.flavus(4.7%), T.coloratus(3.1%), Frankliniella intonsa(3.1%), Megalurothrips distalis(1.1%), T.tabaci(0.8%), and Microcephalothrips abdominalis(0.5%). These eight specific cumulative percentages amounted to about 99.0% of the total individuals. S.dorsalis accounted for more than 60% of the total number from June to October, while it decreased to less than 10% from November to February. The ratio of female/male of S.dorsalis was 1.04 in a tea field of mother bush, 1.65 in a mature tea field and 1.20 when both were combined in 1979,while 0.74 in a mature tea field in 1980. T.hawaiiensis, T.flavus and T.coloratus were collected throughout the year and accounted for more than 90% of the total number from November to April. No distinct relationship was noted between the occurrence of tea diseases and the presence of thrips other than S.dorsalis. However, F.intonsa, T.tabaci, T.flavus, T.hawaiiensis and T.coloratus could possibly be considered as minor pests.
