The amount of chlorophyll and phenol compounds, acid phosphatease activity and some oxidative enzyme activities in the leaf tissue of cabbage injured by the cabbage bug were analyzed or assayed. Peroxidase activity in the injured tissue showed significant differences among different instars. In the pot test, the peroxidase activity increased temporarily after one-day infestation of the fifth-instar nymphs, but then decreased rapidly to a level of activity below that of the uninjured leaf tissue. The acid phosphatase activity and amount of phenol compounds decreased immediately after one-day infestation of the adults, but thereafter it was restored to the level of the uninjured leaf tissue. No apparent change was induced through damage or injury resulting from the attack by the nymphs. The amount of chlorophyll decreased as a result of the feeding of the bug. The degree of the decrease was small in the case of the second-instar nymph and was large in the case of the adult. The physiology of the injury was discussed.
