Hormonal Effect on Cultivated Insect Tissues : III. Effects of α- and β-Ecdysone or Prothoracic Glands on Spermiogenesis in Two Noctuid Insects in vitro Lepidoptera : Noctuidae)

Experiments wer carried to investigated the effects of α- and β-exdysone or phothoracic glands in GRACE's meidum on spermiogenesis of the diapausing pupae of the cabbage armyworm, Mamestera brassiae or the last instar larvae of the tobacco cutworm, Spodoptera litrua. In cultures of the tetes of these 2 spices, spermiogenesis was promptly accelerated with α-ecdysome or prothoracic glands, however, no visible cange occurred when β-ecdysone was added to the medium. The results demonstrated that α- and β-ecdysone action of the development of spermatorysis in different ways, and that spermiogenesis could be promoted by α-ecdysone in GRACE's medium which containing neither insect haemolytmph nor mammalian serum.
